David Frum came on the Rachel Maddow Show last night and thought he could walk all over her with oblique insults. I transcribed some of the exchange below, but it was beautiful to watch her politely confront him and then watch him retreat from his words as he grew increasingly uncomfortable (notice how he bizarrely starts leaning in toward the camera near the end).

Maddow: You said, "Those who press this William Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that's going to be very hard to calm after November."

What do you mean by that in that word "fury"?

Frum: I think you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet we are seeing an intensification of some of the ugliness in tone that has been a feature of American politics in the past eight years and the show unfortunately is itself an example of that problem with its heavy sarcasm and its sneering and disregard for a lot of the substantive issues that are important. I'd hate to see the Republican Party continue this cycle...[blah blah blah...something about doing some serious rebuilding of the GOP in an intelligent way]...and we're all going to have to do better than we've been doing, including in the last forty minutes.

Maddow:Do you think that my tone on this show is equivalent to people calling Barack Obama someone who pals around with terrorists, people yelling from the audience from McCain/Palin rallies "Bomb Obama!", "Kill him!", "Off with his head!", "Traitor!" — are you accusing me of an equivalence in tone?

Frum:I don't think that's an important question.

Setting aside the ludicrous claim that Rachel's show has heavy sarcasm and a sneering disregard of substantive issues, I find it kind of fascinating that Frum does indeed make the false equivalence between Rachel and the McCain campaign (remember, Frum said they were whipping people into a fury —does that really sound like Rachel Maddow?), then tries to sort of worm out of it, even going so far as to admit that she had "brought up a good point" earlier in the show. I think Rachel's argument would have been stronger if she hadn't focused on what rally attendees have said (although her point is perfectly valid), and simply used the absolute smears coming from the McCain campaign itself.

Interesting, isn't it, that a former Bush 43 speech writer is suddenly concerned with the tone of politics in America now that a Democrat is poised to win the White House? Can you say crocodile tears? I knew you could.

A Nutty Claim

I find the whole ACORN brouhaha a big ol' yawner of a non-issue, propagated by a pathetic McCain campaign in its final death throes; however, there were a couple of interesting tidbits recently I thought might be worth saving (emphasis added)...

The facts about ACORN are worth getting out. ACORN is an organization that, among other things, registers low-income people to vote. One of the ways they do this is to hire door-to-door canvassers from the neighborhoods they are working in. This sort of work is tightly regulated. So, when one of the thousands of people they give jobs to doesn't do their work right and brings back bogus or phony voter registration cards, the law REQUIRES that ACORN turn the forms in to the voter registration office. The law, rightly, doesn't want anybody throwing out voter registration forms for any reason.

But ACORN goes a step farther. They have people assigned to do quality control on all the cards--calling people on the forms after they fill them out. When they find bad information on the cards they attach a cover sheet to the card but, as mentioned above, they turn in the cards as required by law. The effect is that a few bad canvassers or a poorly run office will mean that bad cards are submitted as part of the normal process. But ACORN has done everything possible to make sure voting officials know to check the forms.

The sad fact is that in at least one state--Nevada--the voting officials disregarded ACORN's cover sheets flagging the voter registration forms. That should have never happened. The resulting blowup was a scandal in search of a scandal.

The stunning con of this whole thing is the assumption that bad voter registration cards being submitted will lead to vote fraud. If somebody submits a card for Mickey Mouse it isn't like Mr. Mouse is going to show up to vote. There is no voter fraud if nobody votes.

Since Sarah Palin over the last couple of days has repeated an exaggerated relationship between Barack Obama and William Ayers, I feel it's time for a little "embarrassing association" roundup.

CEO pay: What those involved in the financial meltdown made

East Bay Business Times - by Mike Sunnucks and Chris Casacchia

As Congress considers a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street and the banking sector, there are calls to restrict the pay and severance packages for CEOs at investment houses, banks and mortgage lenders poised to be benefit from the plan put forward by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke.

Executives from some of the major investment and commercial banks involved in the financial upheaval and bailout earned hefty paychecks last year, according to proxy statements outlining their salaries, bonuses and stock options:

Lehman Brothers Chairman and CEO Richard Fuld Jr. made $34 million in 2007. Lehman (OTC: LEHMQ) filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection earlier this month.

Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS), which Sunday gained Federal Reserve Bank approval to become a bank holding company, paid its chairman and CEO, Lloyd Blankfein, $70 million last year. Co-Chief Operating Officers Gary Cohn and Jon Winkereid were paid $72.5 million and $71 million, respectively.

American International Group’s chief executive, Martin Sullivan, got a $14 million compensation package in 2007. He was ousted in June. The insurance giant (NYSE:AIG) is on the receiving end of an $85 billion federal bailout. Edward Liddy took over as AIG’s chief executive earlier this month.

Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack earned $1.6 million. Chief Financial Officer Colin Kelleher got a $21 million paycheck in 2007. Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) also received approval to become a banking holding company, a shift that allows Morgan and Goldman to bring in bank deposit assets which offer more-solid financial footing.

Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain was paid $17 million in salary, bonuses and stock options in 2007. Merrill (NYSE: MER) is being acquired by Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC). BofA CEO Kenneth Lewis earned $25 million in 2007.

JP Morgan Chase & Co. Chairman and CEO James Dimon earned $28 million in 2007. Chase (NYSE: JPM) acquired troubled investment house Bear Stearns earlier this year with the federal government promising to take on as much as $30 billion in Bear assets to help get the deal done.

Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd received $11.6 million in 2007. His counterpart at Freddie Mac, Richard Syron, brought in $18 million. The federal government announced earlier this month it was taking over the mortgage backers with Herbert Allison to serve as Fannie CEO and David Moffett the new CEO at Freddie.

Wachovia Corp. Chairman and CEO G. Kennedy Thompson received $21 million in 2007. He was succeeded by Robert Steel as CEO in July. Steel is slated to get a $1 million salary with an opportunity for a $12 million bonus, according to CEO Watch. Wachovia (NYSE: WB) is one of the banks that could be sold in the midst of the financial crisis.

Seattle-based Washington Mutual (NYSE: WAMU) will pay its new CEO, Alan Fishman, a salary and incentive package worth more than $20 million through 2009 for taking the helm of the battered bank, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

CEOs of large U.S. corporations averaged $10.8 million in total compensation in 2006, more than 364 times the pay of the average U.S. worker, according to the latest survey by United for a Fair Economy. Let's see. A few hours have passed since McCain's last lie. Must be time for another!

-The ad claims Obama will raise taxes on electricity. He hasn't proposed any such tax. Obama does support a cap-and-trade policy that would raise the costs of electricity, but so does McCain.

-It falsely claims he would tax home heating oil. Actually, Obama proposed a rebate of up to $1,000 per family to defray increased heating oil costs, funded by what he calls a windfall profits tax on oil companies.

-The ad claims that Obama will tax "life savings." In fact, he would increase capital gains and dividends taxes only for couples earning more than $250,000 per year, or singles making $200,000. For the rest, taxes on investments would remain unchanged.

McCain has made much of a New York Post article that claims Obama improperly asked Iraqis to delay signing off on a "Status of Forces Agreement" until after the November election. Problem is, Undermining McCain Campaign Attack, Republicans Back Obama‘s Version of Meeting With Iraqi Leaders.

Troopergate takes a turn for the weird when Sarah Palin claims the reason she fired Public Safety Commissioner, Walt Monegan, was because he made an unauthorized trip to Washington, D.C. to lobby for funds for an anti-sexual-violence program. Apparently, this was "the last straw" in going against the Palin administration. No to an anti-sexual-violence program, but yes to a bridge to nowhere? Really?
